QUICKNET LAUNCHES SMS PORTAL
KUALA LUMPUR: QuickNet Com (M) Sdn Bhd has introduced mobileExec, a web-based SMS (short message services) portal targeted at the business community.
The service allows users to send out SMS via the Internet to all five mobile networks in Malaysia, namely Maxis, Celcom, Digi, TimeCel and TMTouch.
In addition to sending out standard SMS messages, subscribers can access other features like group SMS, recurring and time delayed SMS, alerts, message status, contact management, message outbox and the ability to receive SMS replies on the Net.
QuickNet chairman and CEO Ramli Amat said the service capitalizes on the growing use of SMS in providing secure, reliable de-livery of messages across multiple carrier networks.
“We are promising commercial-grade services that are vital in any business environment,” he said.
He noted that unlike regular mobile phone subscribers, Quicknet Com's servers are connected directly via leased lines to the SMS centres of all the mobile network operators.
In addition, the service also offers administration tools for user management, system monitoring and message tracking.
When asked about the reliability of SMS communication, Ramli conceded that SMS messages could sometimes be delayed, but said this was almost always due to congestion at the inter-operator gateways, i.e. delayed messages were usually the ones sent between different networks.
He said messages sent through mobile-Exec are less likely to be delayed because of the company's direct connection to the SMS centres.
Users can sign up for the service via prepaid or monthly subscriptions.
mobileExec charges are 18 sen per SMS sent to Maxis users, and 13 sen per SMS sent to other mobile networks.
Ramli said while the service may seem expensive at first, users can expect to save money in the long run because the normal rate for inter-operator SMS is 20 sen a message.
According to Ramli, Quicknet Com is charged a discounted bulk SMS rate by the mobile network operators, but declined to reveal the rate.
